How long does a DMCA takedown take?
It depends on the site, and no honest answer is a single number. The DMCA says a provider must respond "expeditiously" and sets no number of hours or days for it. Some sites act on a notice quickly. Others ignore it, and then I go to their host, their registrar and Google.
The clocks that do exist
| Situation | What the rule says |
|---|---|
| DMCA notice to a provider | Respond "expeditiously". No fixed period. § 512(c)(1)(C) |
| Uploader sends a counter-notice | Material goes back up not less than 10 and not more than 14 business days after the counter-notice, unless you've filed a court action. § 512(g)(2)(C) |
| Intimate image posted without consent, on a covered platform | Remove as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after a valid request. A different law, not copyright. TAKE IT DOWN Act § 3 |
| Google copyright request | No deadline. Google states an average processing time of approximately 6 hours across requests through its Search web form, and says many factors affect any one request. Google's figure, not a promise from me. |
What makes it slower
- The site ignores notices. The notice then goes to the host and registrar, one step at a time: here's the route.
- The real host is hidden. A site behind Cloudflare takes an extra step, because Cloudflare doesn't host the content itself.
- The dead page stays in Google. Google can keep showing a dead page for a while, which is why I also file "remove outdated content" requests.
- It comes back. Re-uploads happen, and a new copy is a new filing.
What I can commit to
I can commit to what I do, not to what a site does. On the one-time clean, everything I find is filed in the first week and re-uploads are filed for 40 days. On the monthly plan I re-scan every week and file new copies as I find them. The monthly plan's weekly report shows what's live, what's cached and what's dead, so you don't have to take my word for it.

Quick answers
Why does a removed page still show up in Google?
Removing a page from a site and removing it from Google are separate things. Google has a remove outdated content tool for content that was deleted from a site but still comes up in Search.
Can a removed page come back?
Yes, in two ways. The uploader can send a counter-notice, which can put the material back within 10 to 14 business days unless you file a court action. Or someone can simply upload it again.
