A potter's hands shaping wet clay on the wheel

I throw stoneware by hand in Galway and film it slowly. This is the one place online I fully control.

About Her

Thirty-six Mugs a Morning, One Gas Kiln

Orla makes everyday stoneware: mugs, bowls, plates and the occasional big jar, thrown on the wheel in a shared studio on the edge of Galway and fired in a gas kiln to around 1,300°C.

Her videos are the opposite of a highlight reel. No music, no jump cuts: forty minutes of the same mug thrown twelve times, mistakes included. Her glazes come out of reduction firing, which is why no two kiln loads look quite alike.

She started with a ten-week evening class in 2019 and has weighed every ball of mug clay to 420 grams since 2021. One still comes out at 426, every time.

People Are Selling Pots I Never Made

Since February 2026 I have found eleven accounts pretending to be me: seven on Instagram, four on TikTok. Most add "shop", "studio" or "official" to my handle, copy my kiln-opening photos, and take bank transfers for pots that do not exist. Seven are gone. I never sell through DMs, and I have no shop account.

This website is the only source I control. If an account isn't listed on my official links page, it is not me, no matter whose pots are on it.

Why Every Mug Starts as 420 Grams of Clay

Every mug I make begins on the scale, not the wheel: what weighing clay to the gram settles before the wheel turns, where the 420 grams go, and when I ignore the number.

What Reduction Firing Actually Does to a Glaze

On firing days I starve a gas kiln of oxygen on purpose. What that does to iron and copper, why my celadon only exists because of it, and why no two firings match.

Drying Pots in a City That Is Never Dry
